Dog Obedience Training Book Reviews

The Top Three e-Books

 

The first three training books below are the top three e-books on the market.  You could pick any one of them and be happy with your choice.  The differences between them are described below and in the expanded reviews.  Don't stress out over picking one.  If you are not sure, use this as a guide:

 

A Simple Selection Guide

  1. You prefer the full scope book, but you want it to be easy to read - select the Daniel Stevens book - Sit Stay Fetch. 
  2. You prefer the comfort of the full reference manual nearby that tells you what to do and why - select the Adam Katz book - Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer. 
  3. You have an adult dog and are concerned if you can teach an old dog new tricks - select the Charlie Lafave book - Dog Training Secrets.
  4. You want one of your kids to do the training - select the Dean Rankin or Dove Cresswell program from the Audio/Video page.
  5. You need good training information on BOTH potty training and obedience training - select the Charlie Lafave book - Dog Training Secrets.
  6. Potty training is not an issue with your dog, but you need behavior training - select either the Daniel Stevens book or the Adam Katz book. 
  7. Potty training is you only issue for now - go to the Potty Training page - select among the books listed and rated there.  But, don't end your dog training there - come back later for a book on obedience training.

 Sit Stay Fetch

This is one of the "top three" e-books available.  It is a very comprehensive book that is the best organized of the top three books and it is easy to read.  The book covers all the issues from A to Z, starting with selecting a puppy that is right for you (if you have not already purchased your pup), all the way to advanced commands and tricks.  This will give you all the information that you need for the full scope of training.   This is a book that you will keep and refer to for the life of your dog.  This book is suitable for any dog owner. 

The four "extras" included are:

  • Dog Grooming e-book
  • Security Training e-book
  • House Training e-book
  • Secrets to Becoming the Alpha Dog e-book. 

An additional extra offered as an "upgrade" is the option to include two software items.  One software item is a 30 minute DVD video instruction of tips and techniques that can help you better understand the written material.  Many people like having visual reinforcement of the training materials to help clarify the methods.  The other software item is a program that helps you keep track of information for your dog or dogs.  The program keeps track of information such as medical history, vaccinations, operations, obedience training, appointments, etc.  It can be very handy when you are making trips to the kennel or the vet, because you can just print out the information that will be needed by them.  This upgrade sells for $23 more.

 Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer

This is another of the top three e-books available.  It is probably the most comprehensive of the top three, although it is not organized as well for easy reading as the other two top rated e-books.  The author's style is comfortable and frequently he takes real dog owner questions or situations and respond with solutions.  So this style might suit you best.  Generally, he gives more expanded answers on all the issues.  This is also one of those dog training reference book that you will keep and refer to for the life of your dog.  If you are the type that likes having a reference book available to you with all the answers, this is your best choice.

 Dog Training Secrets

This is the final of the top three e-books.  It is also very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to read.  The author has a very friendly style and he starts off telling you about how great his dog is, with the purpose of making you jealous.  This book has an expanded section on training an adult dog that may be useful to many dog owners.  The book also includes a section on keeping your dog mentally sharp with games, tricks and teasers.  The author takes the "holistic" approach to dog training, looking at the well being of your dog and the role that training plays in the well being of the dog.  This book is suitable for any dog owner.  I particularly recommend this book if you have an older dog.

Other Lower Cost Books to Consider

Below are additional e-books available on the market for dog training that do not sell as well, but all contain good information.  They are lower priced, but they are also smaller in size and cover less material.  I feel that the Montag book just does not cover enough, so I would recommend the Langton book over it for those that are budget minded.  It gets a lower rating and value due to it being only slightly lower in price (between $7 and $20 cheaper), but containing much less information. 

Audio & Video Option

Another option to consider are two programs that are a little different.  One is an audio program and the other is a "presentation" type program.  See more on these on the Audio & Video page.

 How I Trained My Dog in One Evening

This is an e-book written by a group of experts that is being marketed by the Langton's.  It has a lot of tips on all the basics of dog training, but it is far less comprehensive than the other offerings.  It is easy reading and gets to the point on the major training issues.

 Doggy Be Good

This is a limited scope book that also sticks to the basics.  It lacks much of the information included in the leading e-books, including the important issue of being the Alpha dog in the house.  A good purchase for friends and family of the author interested in providing him financial support, but all others should select one of the books above.
